Bessie Smith Biography

Bessie Smith, the most popular woman blues singer was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee in 1892. She was the daughter of Laura Owens and William Smith. Unfortunately he died when Bessie was a baby.  The family tragedy did not end with this: when Bessie was nine years old she lost her mother and her brother at the same time.

Bessie had older sister-Viola, brothers: Andrew and Clarence. Bessie and Andrew decided to help the family with some money, so they started street performance.

She began her recording career and moved to Philadelphia  in 1923. This year was important for both her career and her personal life: in 1923 her first record was released and she married to Jack Gee. Soon she the highest paid black entertainer of the day, she had her own shows and was popular. The couple divorced in 1929 because of Jack’s the relationship with Gertrude Saunders.

Smith later married to  Richard Morgan, whom she lived with  until her death in 1937.
