Franz Lehar Biography
Franz Lehar, Austrian-Hungarian composer was born Komarom, Kingdom of Hungary on April 30, 1870. He was the son of Franz Lehar Sr., bandmaster and Christine Neubrandt, she was Hungarian.
In difference with Anton, his younger brother who was studying at cadet school, Franz was studying music at the Prague Conservatory, where he learned composition and playing violin. His violin teacher was Antonin Bennewitz. After graduating the conservatory in 1899, Franz joined the band of his father.
The first opera of Franz Lehar is Wiener Frauen, that was performed in Theater an der Wien in 1902. The composer is mostly known for his operettas, the most popular one is The Merry Widow. During 1925-1934 he wrote six operettas for Tauber's voice. By 1935 he formed his publishing house, Publishing House of the Bells, for protecting the author’s rights.
Franz Lehar died on October 24, 1948.
